Frozen Out? Planning Ahead Vital To Ease Financial Burden

When it comes to planning for the later stages of life, a funeral is often the last thing anyone wants to think about.

However, failing to plan the details of what should happen to one’s body after death—and how those arrangements will be paid for—can, without exception, place a significant burden of stress and heartache on the loved ones left behind.

Without clear instructions, families may be uncertain about how best to honour the deceased’s wishes, often facing delays and difficult decisions during an already painful time. The situation can be made even more difficult when financial assets are frozen following a death. Often, bank accounts and other holdings are less accessible, particularly if probate is required meaning that families must find alternative ways to cover immediate expenses such as funeral costs, transportation of the body, or even outstanding household bills. Without proper planning, this can lead to significant financial pressure at the worst possible moment.

“The death of a loved one is stressful enough without the added worry of guessing what they would have chosen for their funeral and how to meet that cost,” said Peter Shuttleworth, General Manager of direct cremation provider Celebration of Life.

“Nine times out of ten, families will have different ideas about what a person might have wanted, and the financial burden on top can push them into emotional turmoil.

“It’s also human nature to go above and beyond—often unnecessarily—as families try to do their best in what will be the final thing they ever do for their loved one.

“A funeral plan is the best way to ensure peace of mind and financial security when the inevitable happens.”

Celebration of Life is one of the UK’s most established providers of direct cremation, a modern alternative where there is no formal funeral service, no mourners, and no traditional elements such as churches, flowers, or hearses. Instead, families often choose to gather at a later time to mark their loved one’s passing in a more personal way—whether through a family meal, holiday, or celebration.

“Although many would admit it’s not a conversation they’re eager to have, families often feel a huge sense of relief once they know their loved one’s wishes are clearly laid out and that funeral expenses are fully covered,” Peter added.

Founded in 2019, Celebration of Life is the UK’s only national funeral provider offering direct cremation both as a prepaid plan or at the time of need and no other type of product or service.

With no hidden costs, the organisation works closely with the families of the deceased, providing the date and time of the cremation and arranging for the ashes to be returned in a biodegradable ‘scatter pod’.

Additionally, for every service carried out, Celebration of Life donates to the National Trust’s Plant a Treefund, offering a certificate in memory of the deceased.
