LNER Boosts Services For This Weekend's Great North Run

Ahead of this weekend’s much anticipated Great North Run, LNER has announced it will be operating extra services, providing thousands more seats to help those attending the event.

Runners and spectators travelling to the half marathon from Edinburgh Waverley, Durham, Darlington, Doncaster or Leeds will be able to join one of the additional services on the morning of Sunday 7 September 2025.

Dozens of LNER colleagues will also be taking part in the annual event, raising money for its charity partner CALM (Campaign Against Living Miserably).

The additional train times are:
06:56 from Leeds, calling at Doncaster (07:30), York (07:54), arriving at Newcastle at 08:50
07:00 from Doncaster, calling at York (07:23), Northallerton (07:43), arriving at Newcastle at 08:23
07:08 from Edinburgh Waverley, calling at Dunbar (07:30), Reston (07:45), Berwick-upon-Tweed (07:56), Alnmouth (08:16), Morpeth (08:31), arriving at Newcastle at 08:57
07:25 from Darlington, calling at Durham (07:44), arriving at Newcastle at 08:01
07:58 from Darlington, calling at Durham (08:16), arriving at Newcastle at 08:29



David Flesher, Commercial Director at LNER, said: “With 60,000 runners set to descend upon Newcastle for this year’s Great North Run, and no doubt many more cheering them on, we are delighted to be operating an additional five services to the city.

We are expecting these services to be extremely popular, so encourage our customers to book ahead and reserve their seat. Everyone at LNER wishes our colleagues running for CALM, and all other participants, the very best of luck for the big day.”

The best value Advance fares are available via the LNER app or at www.lner.co.uk. Standard Advance single tickets to Newcastle from Darlington start at £7.70, £36.50 from Leeds, £28.40 from Doncaster, £4 from Durham, and £34.90 from Edinburgh Waverley.
