Ahead of A-level results day (14th August), around 70,000 students are expected to go through university Clearing, but a new study has found that only one in eight parents understand the process.
With record numbers of students applying for university places this year, Clearing is expected to be busier than ever, so the University of East Anglia (UEA) surveyed 1,000 parents and carers of children aged 16-18 to discover how many feel comfortable offering support. The research found that only one in five (21%) parents feel confident helping their children throughout the process, and a similar number (20%) believe their children feel unprepared to make decisions.
Younger parents (31-34) are more likely to know how Clearing works (17%) and feel confident providing guidance on the day (39%), but across the board, there are concerns that children will panic while on the phone and make the ‘wrong’ choice (20%).
Catherine Kelly from Sheffield has a daughter applying for university this year. “I have been very involved in my child’s decision. We both researched the universities which were most renowned for her course, and I took her to open days, but I don’t know enough about Clearing”, admits Catherine. “The college hosted events for parents explaining the UCAS process up to applying, as well as the financial application process. However, there has been no communication about Clearing other than assuring us that there will be staff available to support. I feel confused about how Clearing works and how I can support my daughter if need arises.”
UEA’s study also explored exactly what parents and carers want from universities for their children. The most desired feature is a reasonable cost of living in the chosen location (43%), such as inexpensive rent and bills. Student safety is also a key concern (39%), and this is particularly true for younger parents (31-34), who value this above any other factor (50%).
Dr Charles Seger, UEA’s Associate Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Recruitment and Admissions, commented on the research. “We know that students and their families often make decisions together about their education – starting university is a major milestone and lifestyle change for both the child and their parents or carers, so it’s only natural that all parties are involved”, he recognises. “That’s why we commissioned this research, to discover exactly what parents and carers are looking for in a university and to reassure them throughout the whole process."
“With the vast majority of parents not feeling confident supporting their children through Clearing, we provide clear, accessible information specifically for parents and carers," he continues, "helping them feel informed and equipped to confidently navigate results day with their child. “Our friendly team are on the end of a phone line talking students and their families through the whole process, and you can call us early if you already have your results.”
