Polo Goes Electric

Original Volkswagen Polo

The new Volkswagen ID. Polo is undoubtedly one of the most important small EVs for the UK, because it takes a familiar badge and turns it into an affordable electric hatchback aimed squarely at mainstream buyers. Volkswagen has positioned it as a practical, high-quality alternative to rivals such as the Renault 5, Citroën ë-C3 and Vauxhall Corsa Electric, with UK pricing expected to start in the low- to mid-£20,000 range, though final UK prices have not yet been confirmed.

What stands out most is the balance of size and space. The ID. Polo is slightly shorter than the petrol Polo, yet it has a longer wheelbase and a much bigger boot, at 441 litres with the seats up, which is more than many cars in the class and a major selling point for family use. It also uses Volkswagen’s new front-motor MEB+ platform, which helps free up interior and luggage room while keeping the car practical for city driving and weekend trips.

Range and performance should be strong for a small EV. There are two battery sizes, 37kWh and 52kWh, with official ranges of up to around 204 miles and 282 miles respectively, depending on version. Power outputs are 116PS, 135PS and 211PS, with a hotter GTI version to follow later, giving the car a bit more breadth than many entry-level electric hatchbacks. That mix should make it appealing both as a first EV and as a second family car.

Inside, Volkswagen appears to have listened to criticism of its earlier electric models. The cabin promises a more familiar layout, with physical buttons returning for key functions, improved quality, and a more conventional driver interface than some of VW’s older ID cars. That matters in the UK, where buyers in this segment want ease of use as much as style or tech.

For British buyers, the ID. Polo could land at exactly the right moment. It combines a trusted name, useful range, decent space and the prospect of competitive pricing, which will make it one of the most closely watched EV launches of 2026.
